Game Weekend #1

Coaches/Parents/Players,

It was great to get out to the fields last weekend to kick off the first weekend of spring games at McAlpine Elementary School.  After such a hard winter (weather wise) the weather was great on Saturday and the players looked like they were really enjoying getting out and running around.

I was fortunate to see the U8 game between Coach Freeland's team and Coach Ruff's team.  The kids seemed to be having a blast and the play was entertaining......for the most part.  I used this game to do some game analysis.

So here are some rough stats........

Game Length:  (4) 12 min quarters  - 48 minute game
Field size: 25yds wide x 35yds long

Amount of Time Ball Was in Play:  less than 11 minutes
Amount of Time Ball Was Out of Play:  more than 37 minutes

My question becomes - if the ball is out of play more than 75% (nearly 80%) of the time, how much learning are our kids receiving?

I look forward to watching a number of other games to compare some more stats.

  1. Wow, unbelieveable - have you done this at other games to see if that is typical? Was it out that much because it was kicked far out of bounds and took a long time to retrieve it? Maybe we can get multiple game balls to get it back in play quickly and have siblings designated as ball boys to retrieve balls far away.
